Camp Birkett
Camp Birkett, an ACA accredited program, has provided traditional day camping on the shores of Silver Lake in Dexter for over 80 years. Camp Birkett is the ideal place for your child to experience the summer outdoors. It is also the perfect place to introduce your child to camping without him/her sleeping away from home. Your child will have the opportunity to participate in activities like canoeing, sailing, swimming, arts and crafts, archery, nature, sports, low ropes team building and much more. Each session has a unique theme, so there is something for everyone to enjoy. Camp facilities include a basketball court, archery range, athletic fields, waterfront and watercraft areas. Want to experience Camp Birkett with your child? Join us for our Family Potlucks! After the potluck, your child can experience overnight camping at Birkett during our sleepovers. Overnights are not offered weekly. The specific dates will be determined and posted in the Parent Planner. Please note that Pre and Post care is not available for Camp Birkett.
Transportation
Transportation is available to and from Camp Birkett. The specific Ann Arbor departure/return location will be printed in the parent handbook, which will be sent to all registered participants beginning in March. Children may be dropped off between 7:45 a.m. and 8:20 a.m. and picked up between 5:00 p.m. and 5:30
p.m. Campers may also be dropped off at Camp Birkett, 9041 Dexter Town-Hall Road, at 9:00 a.m. and picked up at 4:30 p.m.
JUNIOR LEADER-IN-TRAINING PROGRAM (AGES 13-14)
The Junior Leader-In-Training (LIT) program enables campers to build their leadership skills and assume some counselor responsibilities while still participating in Camp Birkett activities. The Junior LIT Program is a combination of workshops,
supervised opportunities with younger campers, program planning and general camp activities. Leadership skills and teamwork are emphasized, along with development of the YMCA character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Sessions 1–10 run concurrently with Camp Birkett program offerings.
SENIOR LEADER-IN-TRAINING PROGRAM (AGES 15-16)
The two-week Senior Leader in Training (LIT) option is an opportunity for your teen to continue his or her participation in the LIT program. For teens with no prior LIT experience, or for those who have been a Junior LIT in the past, this is a wonderful
chance to develop YMCA camp counselor skills. During his or her two-week session, your teen will assume responsibilities and complete tasks focused on interaction with and care of campers. Under the guidance and supervision of the Leadership
Director, Senior LITs will put into practice the skills learned over the week on a daily basis.
