Camp Birkett

An accredited American Camping Association program, Camp Birkett has provided traditional day camping on the shores of Silver Lake in Dexter for more than 80 years. Camp Birkett is the ideal place for your child to experience the summer outdoors. It is also the perfect place to introduce your child to camping without him or her sleeping away from home. Your child will have the opportunity to participate in activities like canoeing, swimming, arts and crafts, archery, nature, sports, low ropes team building and much more.

In 2015, we’re excited to introduce some very special themes and activities that will enhance the camp experience for the many campers that will spend time with us this summer. While each session has a unique theme, campers will still participate in all of their favorite activities and have an opportunity to participate in special interest clubs outside of their daily camper group. Camp facilities include a basketball court, archery range, athletic fields, waterfront and watercraft areas. Please note that Pre- and Post-care is not available for Camp Birkett.

Family Potluck & Overnight
Want to experience Camp Birkett with your child? Join us for our Family Potlucks on the Thursday of each session! After the potluck, your child can experience overnight camping at Birkett during our sleepovers. Overnights are offered weekly for campers enrolled in that session. Overnight registration can only be done online at the time of session registration or over the phone. Families are welcome to attend the potluck regardless of whether their camper is staying overnight.

Transportation is available to and from Camp Birkett. The specific Ann Arbor departure/return location will be printed in the parent handbook, which will be sent to all registered participants beginning in March. Children may be dropped off between 7:45 a.m. and 8:20 a.m. and picked up between 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Campers may also be dropped off at Camp Birkett, 9041 Dexter Town-Hall Road, at 9:00 a.m. and picked up at 4:30 p.m.

Leader-In-Training Program (Ages 13-14)
The Leader-In-Training (LIT) program allows older campers to build their leadership skills and assume some counselor responsibilities while still participating in their favorite Camp Birkett activities. Through a combination of workshops, supervised opportunities with younger campers, program planning and general camp activities, participants will be exposed to the basic elements of youth development through the lens of a camp counselor. Leadership skills and teamwork are emphasized, along with development of the YMCA character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. The LIT program is offered sessions 1–10.
