Expanding Horizons Summer Program

Youth Volunteer Corps – Expanding Horizons Summer Program 2015

Mission

The Ann Arbor YMCA’s Youth Volunteer Corps is a youth driven organization dedicated to serving the needs of the community, providing opportunities for youth to engage in meaningful service learning activities, promoting among young people and residents a greater understanding and appreciation for the diversity of their community, and promoting a lifelong ethic of volunteerism and commitment to social justice.

Expanding Horizons, YVC’s intensive summer program, provides weeklong blocks of service learning projects throughout Washtenaw County for teens aged 11-17. Expanding Horizons reinforces teamwork skills, appreciation for diversity, and civic responsibility.

Teens travel together on foot or via public transportation to pre-arranged projects in the Washtenaw County area.  Depending on the project and agency involved, participants can spend anywhere from a few hours to a full week completing the service. Examples of agencies that YVC has served in the past include The Oaks, Natural Area Preserve, SOS Community Services, Hands on Museum and many more.

Under the supervision of YVC adult team leaders, the participants learn beforehand about the mission of each individual agency they are to serve. The staff and teens discuss the goals of each project and establish work guidelines prior to project site arrival.  Each session is concluded with a reflection process, facilitated by a YMCA YVC Team Leader, who engage participants in meaningful group discussion and active appreciation.

The YVC summer program runs Monday – Thursday, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Check in will begin at 8:45 a.m. at Bach Elementary, located at 600 W. Jefferson St, Ann Arbor, MI. Although all sessions will be based out of Ann Arbor and in order to accommodate those living in Ypsilanti, there will be a bus running from Estabrook Elementary, located at 1555 W. Cross Street, Ypsilanti, MI. The Y bus will be picking up YVC participants at 8:20 a.m. and departing promptly by 8:30 am to Bach Elementary. If you are interested in utilizing the Y bus service from Estabrook to Bach, please contact Abbey Davis at adavis@annarborymca.org or 734.661.8012, as there are limited spaces available.

ATTENTION!

YVC Registration is available online!  Going online is the fastest way to get registered.  Hard copy registrations will be processed as they are received by our YVC coordinator.  This can be anywhere from an hour to, in the case of the weekend, a couple days.  We strongly recommend registering online so you do not miss out on the session you want as a result of the lag between receipt and processing.  Hard copy forms received prior to the start of registration will be held and processed on the 11th.  There is NO advantage to handing in a form early as it will be processed at our first opportunity on the 11th, not necessarily at 6:00 a.m.  If you have any questions, please contact Abbey Davis at (734)661-8017 or adavis@annarborymca.org.  Thank you!

Visit annarborymca.org to create an account.  Just click on the “register now” button and then “register an account”.  Remember to create an account for the person who will participate in the program.  You do not have to be a member to register online.  If you do not have access to a computer, the Y offers the complimentary use of one at the front desk.
