The Ann Arbor YMCA offers a wide variety of Health and Fitness classes. Classes include:

Health and Fitness Classes

Cardio Pilates

A conditioning workout for the whole body. The class will consist of an aerobic warm-up followed by Pilates-style total body conditioning exercises.

Beginning Pilates

A balanced workout of exercises designed to focus on the stabilizing muscles of the abs and back. Mat workouts are designed to promote both control and flexibility while working in a variety of positions. Pilates provides a total body workout and complements cardio and weight training. Benefits of Pilates include improved posture and alignment, balance and coordination, as well as increased endurance and muscle tone. Regular attendance is encouraged so that participants can progress through the basic principles and core exercises.

Intermediate Pilates

For the seasoned Pilates participant. Take your training to ahigher level with a class that builds on the basics increasingthe difficulty of each exercise and introducing some new ones. The class will require additional strength and control and focus on working one exercise right into the next, creating acomplete and challenging workout. Participants should completea minimum of two 8-week sessions of Beginning Pilates before enrolling in the intermediate class.

Pilates Sculpt

This one hour class will consist of half an hour of strength and conditioning using free weights, followed by Pilates mat work targeted to improve abdominal strength. The strength portion will incorporate dynamic movements – lunges, kicks and squats– that will engage the core muscles in order to maintain balance.

Intermediate Pilates Sculpt

This class will build on previous successes, adding new material that will continue to challenge participants. Benefits of this class are deep core strengthening, upper body toning, improved balance, posture and flexibility. Prerequisite: Minimum of one Pilates Sculpt session at the beginning level.

Pilates on the Ball

This exciting and challenging fitness class focuses on core stabilityexercise and incorporates elements of flexibility, coordination, balance and strength with the use of stability balls and other props.

Body Pilates

Body Pilates combines Bodyworks, an intense session of cardiokickboxing, along with the core strengthening principles ofPilates. If you're looking for a fun and fierce total body workout, check out Body Pilates.

Power Yoga-Pilates

This class is intended for individuals interested in creating balance, concentration, strength, flexibility, stamina, improved circulation, and relaxation. Designed to meet a wide range of fitness levels, the class caters both to those looking for a challenging, vigorous aerobic class, as well as those seeking a more relaxing experience.The class will combine Vinyasa-style yoga - various postures, flowing sequences, balancing poses and breathing exercises, with Pilates concepts focusing on the core; all aimed at creating high levels of mind and body fitness. Both strength and stretching will be taught, linking breath with movement for an invigorating, full-body workout to help you start your day.

Pilates Props Workout

Intensify your Pilates mat workout using a variety of props, including elastic bands, foam roller and the Pilates ring (also called the Magic Circle). Use the roller to build balance andchallenge your stability. Use the ring to fully engage the core muscles, and use elastic bands to increase resistance. Get ready to take your workout to the next level!

Conditioning For Life

All levels of fitness and bantering are welcome in this class that will stretch and exercise your mind and body through jogging/walking, general conditioning exercises, and the relentless pursuit of trivial knowledge. Let a master of repartee take you down this time-tested road to fitness. Meets M/W/F. Only one registration required for all three days.

Exercise Lite Level 1

Appropriate for anyone looking for a slower paced class who may be in need of seated options for the majority of exercises. The class will use gentle activities to help increase joint flexibility, range of motion, muscle strength and stamina. Meets Monday & Wednesday from 11:00am-noon, Friday from 2:45-3:45pm. Only one registration required for all three days.

Stretch & Tone

Enjoy a workout that emphasizes flexibility and core strengthening.

All Around Fitness (formerly Fitness for the Ages)

Good for anyone who wants a low-impact, moderately paced aerobic, strength and flexibility class. Meets Monday & Wednesday 9:45-10:45am, Friday 1:30-2:30pm. Only oneregistration required for all three days.

Conditioning for Older Adults

Older adults are invited to drop in any Tuesday or Thursday between 11:00am and 12:00pm for assistance with propertechnique and safety using our Cybex strength training equipment. Free to members, no registration required.

Intro to Studio Cycling

An introduction to Studio Cycling appropriate for those who are new to exercise or to Studio Cycling. Thorough coveragewill be given to bike fit, technique, drills and appropriate levels of exertion.Workout difficulty will gradually progress throughout the course.

Studio Cycling

Studio Cycling is an invigorating, low- impact workout in which intensity can be individualized. If you like the group exercise approach, enjoy indoor cycling, and prefer easy-to-follow, low- impact exercise, and the ability to determine your own intensity level, then this is the class for you.

Advanced Studio Cycling

An advanced and challenging 75-90 minute workout for those who are looking for a little extra kick start to their day. Studio and/or outdoor cycling experience recommended.

Studio Cycling - Bike & Tone

A regular, 45-55 minute Studio Cycling workout, followed by a quick set of toning and sculpting exercises utilizing resistance bands, stability balls and hand-held weights. Perfect for people on the go!

Cardio Karate

A class that emphasizes martial arts moves in a vigorous choreographed workout.

Step Survival

A high intensity, very high energy, interval aerobic workout that emphasizes endurance and muscular conditioning. If you survive this class, you will feel great all day.

Advanced Step

This class will include more advanced step choreography and will add an element of dance to provide a great workout for your mind and body. We'll pack a lot into one hour with a full, intense aerobic workout and toning all of the major muscle groups.

Bodyworks

Get ready for a high energy cardio workout! We will tone and strengthen the body through a series of punches, kicks, crunches, and lunges as we work rhythm and funk into highimpact activity. This mix of cardio and dance will get your heart pumping! So come, jump into the energy!

Complete Conditioning

Complete conditioning combines an all over resistance workout with a non-stop cardio workout.With the use of medicine balls, jump ropes, free weights and various bike and track cardio drills, participants can expect to reach a new level of physical fitness.

Women on Weights

This eight-week beginner level class will introduce women to the principles of safe and effective strength training in a motivating and supportive environment. Class sessions will combine the use of light hand held weights, free weight area equipment and Cybex machines. Participants will be instructed in proper technique and form, basic biomechanics and anatomy, and strength training program design.

Cardio Plus

A 75 minute workout to meet all your needs: cardio, weight resistance and pilates toning. Cardio and weights portion done in interval format using basic step moves. You adjust the intensity to suit your needs. Final 30 minutes is Pilates. A complete package!

Core Essentials

The Core Essentials class is a great way to improve posture and strengthen the core body area. Join us for a free, instructor-led drop in addition to your workout. Please arrive warmed up and ready to exercise. No registration is required for this drop-in class.

Flex & Firm

This class will help you lengthen and strengthen your body, using a fusion of Pilates,Yoga,Tai Chi and other techniques. While toning all the muscles in the body, there will be specialemphasis on the core. Workouts will also focus on increasing flexibility to maximize the muscle building process and avoid injury. It is recommended, but not essential, that participants bring a yoga mat to class. Please see instructor for details.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa yoga is a rhythmic, flowing, and dynamic practice that includes attention to detail and is structured around building mindfulness into ones yoga practice. Class will emphasize sunsalutations, standing postures, and introduction to some seated postures and back bends. The intention for practice is to build heat and detoxify the body, free the mind from habits, and enliven the spirit.

Stanford Healthy Lifestyle Program

This is a 10-month program for people who wish to make a lifestyle change in areas such as weight management, increased physical activity, improved nutrition, or stress reduction. Developed by the Stanford Prevention Research Center (SPRC), the program focuses on disease prevention through gradual and sustainable lifestyle changes. Potential participants are screened in a one-on-one process by the lifestyle coach to determine their readiness for change and commitment to the 10-month process. Program participants will meet weekly for the first month and bi-weekly thereafter on Tuesdays from 9:15-10:15am. Fees: Members: $50.00. Non-Members: $100.00

Orienteering

Orienteering is a sport involving navigation with map and compass. Participants have a map, usually of an area withwhich they are unfamiliar, and a compass. They attempt to visit, in sequence and as quickly as possible, control points that are indicated on the map. This class is intended for those who are interested in learning how to orienteer. Classroomwork will include techniques, strategies and course reviews. There will be four Tuesday evening classroom sessions and four weekend competitions. Students will compete in the Southern Michigan Orienteering meets during September through November.

 

Personal Fitness

Wellness Center Orientation – FREE!

Let a fitness staff person take you through a free, one-on-one orientation to our Wellness Center equipment. Stop by or call the membership desk to sign up for your one-hour appointment. Orientations are often available on a walk-up basis—just ask the staff person at the wellness desk. Required for teens aged 12-14, but recommended for all new members.

Fitness Assessment Consultation

Let us help you set your fitness goals! This assessment includes heart rate, blood pressure, body composition, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance. By appointment. Fee: $40 members, $55 non-members.

Nutritional Consultation

Meet one-on-one with a registered dietitian to determine your nutrition goals. Areas of counseling include general nutrition, wellness, weight control, prenatal/childhood nutrition and sports nutrition. By appointment. Fee: $45 for members, $55 non-members.

Personal Training

Get the most out of your workouts with individualized instruction! Let an experienced and motivating exercise specialist develop an exercise program to best meet your personal fitness goals and needs. By appointment. Fee: $45 members (10 sessions $400.)

Personal Mat and/or Reformer Pilates Training

Work one-on-one with a Pilates instructor to condition yourself through a unique form of exercise. Focus will be placed on the mind-body connection and proper exercise form for enhancing the strength of the core, or torso, muscles. By appointment. Fee: Mat Pilates: $50/members or 5 sessions for $225, $75/non-members or 5 sessions for $325. Reformer Pilates: $50/members, 5 sessions for $225.00, $75/non-members, $375 for 5 sessions.

Personal Fitness Appointment Cancellation Policy

Your appointment is valuable; it is reserved for you and you alone. Therefore we ask that you provide at least 24 hour notice for a cancellation. Members who provide less than a 24 hour notice must pay in full for their session. To cancel an appointment, please either contact your trainer directly or call the YMCA member desk at 734-996-9622.
