Sports and Recreation

At the Y, sports and recreational activities are something special. Friendly competition (even with yourself), lots of variety and a supportive environment means team sports and recreation is fun again, and it makes for a healthier lifestyle and a good story or two.

Did you know that both Basketball and Volleyball were both invented by YMCA staff?  James Naismith (1861-1939) was an instructor at the YMCA Springfield Training College searching for a way for his young male students to stay active during the cold New England winters.  He created "basketball" with a hanging peach crate in an  indoor gym in 1891.  Four years later at the same college, William Morgan (1870-1942) created volleyball as a less challenging alternative.

Whether you miss “suiting up” or are new to team sports, the Y’s sports leagues provide a perfect opportunity to be active, social and reconnect or start fresh with a sport you love. Basketball, futsal, volleyball, and pickleball are options available to get you back on the court.

Our recreational teams are the perfect opportunity to learn a new skill and make some new friends.  Pickleball (a racquet sport  a little like a combined version of badminton and tennis, except with a wiffle ball), is played on a drop-in basis on Friday mornings (9:30-11:30) and is free for members.  Badminton (also free for members), is great for informal games, fun and exercise. Our instructors will help you improve your skills and general game play with tuition within a games based environment. Participants of all levels are welcome to attend. Some equipment is available to loan but we recommend all participants bring their own racquet.

Fencing is a mental and physical high-energy sport that combines the intrigue of sword play with cardiovascular conditioning. An age-old art originally vital for self-defense, fencing is practiced today for its own sake. Students study footwork and blade technique, and work to develop speed, timing, leverage and precision. The result is a skill which is controlled, graceful and athletic. Participants should wear court shoes and loose-fitting clothes. Fencing equipment is provided.
