NEW MEMBER FAQ’S:
Q: When is the Y open?
A: Monday–Friday: 5:30 a.m.–10:00 p.m. Saturday–Sunday: 7:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. The Y will have limited hours and program offerings on certain holidays. Please refer to the homepage for facility closures, or text “Facility” to 844.608.9622 to sign up for real-time notifications for the building and “Pool” to the same number for real-time notification for the pools.
Q: Where should I park?
A: While parking in downtown Ann Arbor can sometimes be challenging, there is typcially street parking available around the Y. In addition, surface parking lot options are here.
Q: How do I find out what’s going on at the Y?
A: Critical facility information about the building (including pool closures, snow days etc.) can be accessed on the homepage. To get real time alerts, simply text “Facility” to 844.608.9622 on your smart phone. Regular data messaging rates apply. In order to delete the service, please text “Stop” to 844.608.9622. Texts regarding other programs can be accessed by texting the following keywords to 844.608.9622:

Q: Does the Y provide towel service?
A: Each member may pick up one towel per visit upon entering the building.
Q: Are lockers available?
A: There are lockers in the five locker rooms: Boys’ (under 18), Girls’ (under 18), Mens’, Womens’ and Universal Access. Parents may accompany a child of the same gender into the boys’ or girls’ locker rooms. Parents needing to accompany an opposite-gender child should use the Universal Access locker room. Individual changing cabanas are provided there for your convenience. You may put your belongings in any open locker and supply your own combination or key lock. Please remember to remove all belongings when you have finished for the day. Additionally, small security lockers are available on the first floor; tokens to operate these lockers are free and available at the Membership Desk. Master locks for the locker room lockers are for sale for $7.00.
Q: How do I sign-up for a Wellness Center Orientation?
A: Appointments for Orientation are available daily. Stop by or phone the Membership Desk to make an appointment at your convenience. A member of the Wellness Floor staff will work with you one-on-one to demonstrate safe and appropriate use of the equipment. Additional assistance is always available from the circulating staff on the Wellness Floor.
Q: May I bring a guest with me to the Y?
A: Each individual member over 20, or each adult on a Family membership will have the privilege of bringing a guest for free three times per calendar year. Additional guest passes can be purchased for $10 a piece for anyone 12+ and $5 for anyone under the age of 12. Guest passes are stored electronically for your convenience. Simply stop by the Membership Desk and let the staff know that you have brought a guest. Your guest will need to provide photo identification and sign our guest book. Please note: every guest under age 18 must have an emergency contact from signed by a parent/guardian on file each calendar year.
Q: I’d like to change my billing information. How do I do this?
A: Please stop by the Membership Desk and inform the staff of any billing changes as soon as possible. Similar to when membership is initiated, the staff will need to verify credit card information in person. For checking account changes, one month’s fees will be needed at the time of the change.
Q: Is there food available for purchase at the Y?
A: There are vending machines filled with healthy options on the first floor off of the lobby. Please limit your eating and drinking (other than water) to the lobby area.
Q: Is there a public phone available at the Y?
A: There is a courtesy phone in our lobby. Local calls can be made by touching “9” to get an outside line.
Q: I may have left something at the Y. Is there a lost-and-found?
A: Items are placed in our Housekeeping room for a limited period then donated to charity. Found valuables are held in a secure office. Please ask any Membership staff for assistance.
Q: How do I place my membership on hold?
A: Memberships can be placed on hold for up to 2 months per calendar year. Membership hold requests must be completed in writing 30 days prior to the next scheduled automatic monthly withdrawal. During the hold period, members do not have access to the facility or member pricing on classes or programs. At the end of the hold period, the monthly draft automatically restarts.
Q: I need to cancel my membership, how do I do this?
A: To terminate your membership, you need give the Y written notice 30 days prior to your next scheduled withdrawal date. Memberships are non-refundable and non-transferable. Memberships not renewed within 60 days of expiration will be assessed a joining fee upon future reinstatement of the membership.
Q: Do I need to reserve a lane to swim laps?
A: Lap lanes are available on a first come/first served basis.
Lap swim etiquette:
CARING– For everyone’s safety: We request that upon entering an occupied lane, please make sure the other swimmer(s) are aware that you will be sharing the space.
HONESTY- Choose the lane that best fits your swimming ability and speed before entering the water.
RESPECT– Be patient and respectful of others.
RESPONSIBILITY– Circle swim (counter clockwise) when there are more than two swimmers per lane. Enjoy your workout!! When we work together, lap swimming can be a wonderful and rewarding experience for all.
Q: Do I need to take a swim test before entering the pool for the first time? Do my children?
A: The ANN ARBOR YMCA requires that all children 14 years of age or younger be swim-tested before being permitted to use our lap pool. Once a swim test has been completed, the swimmer’s name will be logged by the lifeguard and entered into our membership base. During each YMCA visit, swimmers who have passed the test MUST pick up a GREEN wristband from the lifeguard office prior to entering the pool for the day.
Lap Pool Swim Test– Swim 1 lap (50 yards), and tread water for 30 seconds. The swim must be a competitive stroke, in good form. “Doggie paddling” does not count. Swim tests are at the lifeguard’s discretion. If for any reason the lifeguard feels a swimmer is unsafe, he/she may be asked to re-take the test. Anybody of ANY AGE can be asked to take the swim test for the safety of all patrons.
Family Pool Open Swim Policy: All children 7-14 years of age who have not taken the swim test MUST wear a RED wristband at all open-swim times while in the Family Pool. All children 6 years of age or younger must be accompanied in the water by a parent or guardian 16 years or older. Red bands are available on the pool deck. Please return all bands to the pool deck or Member Services desk before leaving the building. *Days/ times to be swim tested are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 5:30-6pm.
GYM AND FITNESS EQUIPMENT
Q: I know I am supposed to clean the cardio equipment after I am finished using it. How do I do this?
A: Several cleaning stations in the Wellness Center are stocked with towels and disinfectant. There is also hand sanitizer for your convenience.
Q: May I reserve a basketball court?
A: Open gym court space is available on a first come/first served basis and may not be reserved in advance. The Gym schedule is posted in the Gym, at the Membership Desk and on the website under “Facility Schedules” (www.annarborymca.org).
Q: How do I register for classes?
A: Y Members may register on the homepage by clicking on the red REGISTER button, or in person/by phone.
Q: Should I register for free classes or only for those with a fee?
A: Please do! By registering, you reserve a spot in these popular classes. You may always “drop in” to free classes, however, a space is not guaranteed.
Q: Where are the classes held?
A: Most non-aquatic classes are held in the studios on the second floor. They are designated A-E in the Program Guide.
