Karen is a veteran Safety-Around-Water mom. She keeps an eye out every year for the flyers to be distributed at her children’s school and immediately signs the three of them up for the week of free learn-to-swim classes. “Money is tight, and I can’t pay for them to take swim lessons otherwise, but we are around water all the time! Each year, after the SAW classes, I see a change in my kids: they are more confident in the water, and I feel more confident too, knowing that they have gained skills that can keep them safe. I actually learned to swim at a Y when I was growing up, and I’m so happy that now my kids are too. Swimming is an essential life skill, and Safety Around Water, offered to the community free of charge is one way that the Y seeks to impact our community, one family at a time. Arturo sits on the bench holding his six-month-old baby girl while his seven year old Diego bounces beside him. They are watching sister Alexa, 3 ½ enthusiastically blow bubbles during her SAW lesson: a previously undiscovered skill that is sure to get lots of bathtub practice in the coming weeks. Diego already had his lesson today: he confidently asserts that he is getting “really good” at the kick board, and can jump in to the deep water too. Arturo smiles and explains that the family loves coming to spend time together at the Y, and frequently find themselves in the family pool with all the kids: it’s a favorite weekend outing. Knowing that the kids are learning about how to keep themselves and each other safe in the water means that those afternoons in the pool will be all the more enjoyable. Andrew and Jack are ALMOST 7 ½. As they towel off after their SAW class they chatter over each other, clamoring to find out if their mom, sitting on the side, has seen their extreme bravery when jumping into the pool and “blasting off” the side. Their mom, Casey, assures them she is very impressed and saw the whole thing. In fact, Casey is tickled that her boys even dipped a toe; in previous experiences they have silently sat on the side and watched, but declined to participate. “I’m so happy that they have had fun this week at SAW! It’s going to make such a big difference this summer, because they will be more confident in and around the water: this is a game-changer for our family!” Please help support the Y by giving to the 2020 Annual Campaign. Tiana is a resident of Glencoe Hills where she lives with her husband and children Deana (8), Derrick (7), Tayah (5), Nadia (3) and Titan (1). She was poolside with Nadia and Titan on a sunny afternoon while the three older children participated in the free Safety Around Water program provided by the YMCA in the Glencoe Hills Apartment pool. “This program has been so wonderful for our family. I have watched my oldest daughter Deana go from not wanting to put her head in the water, to timidly blowing bubbles to today when she cannonballed in! These kids always want to be near the water on a hot day, and I want to make sure that they can stay safe and know what to do in an emergency for themselves and for each other. Trevian (8) is a social guy and he loves to play outside with his friends. During the hot summer, lots of the kids have been hanging out at a pool, and that’s a problem, because Trevian doesn’t know how to swim and is therefore afraid of the water. Luckily, Trevian’s mom heard about the Y’s Safety Around Water program offered in their very own Mckinley apartment complex at Glencoe Hills. She signed him up for the free two-week program, and by the end of the second week of classes both mother and son feel more confident about Trevian spending time at the pool. No need to hide inside on a hot summer day when everyone else is splashing: Trevian is all in! Please help support the Y by giving to the 2020 Annual Campaign.
