Thanks to contributions from McKinley Properties and the Dick Beedon Memorial Fund, the Ann Arbor YMCA will be offering its free annual Safety Around Water (SAW) classes in locations around Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti this summer.
SAW is an annual learn to swim program teaching kids and families how to be safer in and around the water. Instruction will include tips on beach, pool, waterpark, and boating safety, as well as stroke development.
The classes in Ann Arbor are designed for children aged 3 to 12 years and will be held at Downtown Membership Branch of the Ann Arbor Y at 400 West Washington Street from June 12-16.
The classes in Ypsilanti are designed for children aged 5 to 12 years and will be held at several McKinley Properties across Washtenaw County in July and August.
Ann Arbor Y President and CEO Toni Kayumi says, “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more children ages 1 through 4 dies from drowning than any other cause of death, and for kids ages 5 through 14 drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death after motor vehicle crashes. That is why the YMCA, and our generous donors prioritize providing free water safety classes throughout Washtenaw County.”
