Neal is a principal at SmithGroup, an international Architecture, Planning, and Design firm. For 30 years he has been a planner, urban designer, and landscape architect focused on the planning of college and university campuses and the design of open spaces that make the campus a more vibrant, sustainable, diverse and inclusive student learning environment. His travels have taken him to hundreds of university campuses in large cities and small college towns all over the world. He believes it’s important to create places that are inclusive, welcoming, and comfortable to all people. That means a process of listening to the community and seeking out those whose voices are seldom heard. He lives on the Old West Side of Ann Arbor with his wife and son.
