More than 98 million adults in the U.S. have prediabetes.

That’s 1 out of every 3 Americans! Yet, 9 out of 10 people don’t even know they have it. Prediabetes is a serious health condition that raises the risk of Type 2 diabetes and other health problems. The YMCA is here to help.

About the Program

The YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program (YDPP) is a year-long, Center for Disease Control (CDC)-based lifestyle program for adults at high risk for type 2 diabetes. In small-group sessions—offered in person or online—you’ll work to build healthier habits around eating, activity, stress, and long-term behavior change.

Participants who follow the program can reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58% (and 71% for adults over 60).

GOALS FOR PARTICIPANTS:

  • Lose 5-7% of body weight
  • Work up to 150 minutes of movement each week
  • Lower A1C level
Who It’s For

The program is ideal for adults (18+) who:

  • Have a BMI of 25 or more.
  • Have a qualifying lab value or previous diagnosis of gestational diabetes.

A Statewide Effort for a Healthier Michigan

Michigan YMCAs, supported by the Muskegon YMCA and the State Alliance of Michigan YMCAs, have served more than 1,300 participants across the state. Local YMCA partners across Michigan help bring this life-changing program to communities statewide.

More than 1 million Michigan adults live with diabetes, and many more have prediabetes without knowing it. Left untreated, type 2 diabetes can lead to serious health complications—but it can often be prevented or delayed. The YMCA is here to help.

How the Program Works

We help you make sustainable changes through:

  • Year-long structure: 16 weekly sessions, then biweekly and monthly meetings.
  • Coaching & accountability: Trained Lifestyle Coaches tailor discussions to group needs and support you every step of the way.
  • Flexible delivery: In-person or virtual classes, plus access to an in-person or virtual YMCA membership during the program.
  • Cost: This program is funded through a mix of sponsorships, grants, employers, insurance reimbursement and self-pay. We work hard to ensure that anyone who qualifies is able to participate and have scholarships available.

  2. Complete a risk assessment or BMI/lab eligibility check.
  3. Register for a cohort that fits your schedule—morning, afternoon, evening, in-person, or virtual.
  4. Begin your year-long journey toward better health.
