I am a Current Member

If a current member wants to refer a friend, they must submit the Better Together referral form through the “Get Started” button below. Referral requests will only be accepted through the online form.

After your referral joins, you will be sent the Better Together membership agreement to sign. As a current member, your member referral rate will take effect on the next drafting cycle after your friend joins and all required paperwork has been completed by both parties.



Are you and your friend both new to the Y? No problem! Non-members are eligible for this special too!

If you are new to the Y, submit the Better Together referral form through the button below and select “Non-Member with Non-Member”. Referral requests will only be accepted through the online form.

Once your membership paperwork has been completed, you both receive 20% off your monthly dues as long as you both remain members!

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Better Together Program is only applicable to Young Adult, Adult, Senior, Senior Couple or Family or Single-Parent Family memberships at the Ann Arbor YMCA.
    *Please note that Student memberships are not eligible for this program.
  2. Memberships must be paid with a monthly automatic draft off a credit/debit card or bank account.
  3. Maintain your account in good standing by keeping all monthly payments current and abiding by all guidelines required by the Y.

Better together Frequently Asked Questions

Do i still pay the membership join fee?

The Better Together Program only reduces the monthly membership rate. The one-time annual join fee applied to all applicable membership types (Adult, Senior, Family or Single-Parent Family) is not affected by this program.

who is eligible to participate in this program?

Anyone signing up for a Young Adult, Adult, Senior, Family or Single-Parent Family membership at the Ann Arbor YMCA is eligible for the Better Together Program. Joining members must pay for their membership with a monthly automatic draft off a credit/debit card or bank account.

What if I Have an annual membership?

To receive the Better Together rate, you will need to convert your annual membership to a monthly draft for either party to qualify for the discount. The membership staff at the Front Desk can assist you in converting to a monthly draft. Once converted, the 20% discount will go into effect on the first draft date

Can I refer more than one friend?

Yes! While you can only receive a maximum 20% reduced membership rate, we encourage members to refer multiple friends to ensure you’ll continue receiving a reduced rate even if one of your Better Together partners leave the Y or no longer qualifies for the program.

Can I sign up for this type of membership online?

Those looking to join the Y with the Better Together Program can begin their application online to join the program through the “Refer a Friend” form, but finalized paperwork must be completed in-person at the front desk to receive the program discount.

What happens if my Better Together program Partner leaves the Y?

Should one of you cancel your membership, the remaining member has 30 days to refer another friend or family member to join. If the remaining member is unable to confirm a new program partner within that time frame, the reduced membership rate returns to the standard rate for your membership category.

Before the program started, I referred multiple friends to join the Y. Can I receive a reduced rate for their memberships?

No. The member referral rate is only available to members joining during the duration of this special.

I’m a current member; can I refer a friend who is also a current member?

No, current members may only refer a new member to benefit from the program.

Can a current member cancel and rejoin with another current member under the<br /> Better Together program?

No. To qualify for the Better Together program, a referred friend cannot have had a membership at the Ann Arbor YMCA within the past three months (90 days). Dropping your membership and re-joining again to get the discount does not align with our core values. To receive the 20% savings, your membership must be inactive for at least 90 days.

I’m a new member; can I take advantage of this program and refer a friend?

New members may refer a friend after their account has been activated and valid payment information is on file for the account.

How long is the Better Together rate valid?

The reduced rate received from participating in the Better Together program is good for as long as both parties remain members.

Does the 20% discount apply to programs and membership add-ons?

No, the 20% discount is only applied to membership dues.

Can I upgrade or downgrade my membership if I am part of the Better Together<br /> program?

Yes, you can upgrade or downgrade your membership as long as both members retain an eligible membership type.

I have a virtual Y360 membership. Can I refer a friend for this program?

Yes! Should your friend or family member decide to join, they will receive the Better Together rate for the membership category they select. Your membership will remain at the $10 virtual rate.

I’m currently receiving the Better Together discount but am thinking about switching<br /> to a virtual Y360 membership. If I downgrade my membership to Y360, will my buddy<br /> lose their Better Together discount?

No. Should you choose to downgrade to Y360, your buddy will continue to receive the Better Together discount. However, the discount will not be applied towards your Y360 membership rate. Should you decide to upgrade back to a standard membership type, the Better Together discount will be applied towards your monthly dues again, as long as your program partner is still an active member.

I am joining the Y as a new member with the Better Together program. Do I have to pay a joining fee?

Yes. You will still pay the full joining fee at the time you join the Y. The only exceptions to this are if you were a member of another YMCA within the last 60 days or live with a current Ann Arbor YMCA member who has paid the joining fee. The 20% discount is not applied to the joining fee.

If the standard rate of membership changes, how will this impact my monthly rate?

The Better Together rate is 20% off the standard rate. If the standard rate changes, the 20% off will adjust accordingly to the new standard rate.

I am currently receiving financial assistance for my membership. Can I refer a friend for this program?

Yes! Should your friend or family member decide to join, they will receive the Better Together rate for the membership category they select. Your membership will remain at your financial assistance rate or be reduced to the Better Together rate for your current membership type, whichever is less.

I currently receive a reduced rate for my membership. Can I still refer a friend for this<br /> program?

Yes! Should your friend or family member decide to join, they will receive the Better Together rate for the membership category they select. Your membership will remain at your current reduced rate or be reduced to the Better Together rate for your current membership type, whichever is less.

What if someone who pays the full standard rate refers someone who qualifies and chooses an alternative (not Better Together) discounted membership?

The referring (current) member will receive the Better Together rate and their program partner would receive the alternative discounted membership rate that they qualify for.

Do I need to be with the friends or family that I referred when they join?

No. Referred program partners will receive instruction via email on how to join, but you do not need to be present when they join.

When will my referred member rate go into effect?

As a current member, your member referral rate will take effect on the next drafting cycle after your friend joins and has completed all requirements. The member referral rate will go into effect for the new member immediately.
