Parkinson’s Exercise Program
The Ann Arbor YMCA Parkinson’s Exercise Program provides a welcoming, supportive community for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Together, participants take part in weekly exercise programs designed to build strength and endurance, improve balance, and build community with peers experiencing the effects of PD.
Instructors incorporate a mixture of cardio, strength training, and mental stimulation activities into a weekly exercise program to challenge and engage participants to support disease symptom management.
Who can join the Parkinson’s Exercise Program?
- Individuals over the age of 35.
- Individuals with an Idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis and their caretakers.
- Individuals who have completed and submitted a signed Medical Screening and Permission form.

Building Strength and Community
Building a community of peers living with a similar diagnosis provides support and belonging, reducing isolation and loneliness that can come with living with chronic disease. The Ann Arbor YMCA has offered Parkinson’s programs since 2020!
What is Parkinson’s disease?
Parkinson’s is a progressive disease caused by a degeneration of nerve cells in the dopamine-producing area of the brain called the substantia nigra.
The progression of symptoms can differ from person to person due to the diversity of the disease. People with PD may experience:
- Resting tremor in the hands, arms, legs, or jaw
- Slowness and reduction of movement (bradykinesia/hypokinesia)
- Rigidity of limbs or muscles
- Gait and balance problems (postural instability)
- Non-motor symptoms: Depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and cognitive impairments
